Abstract:

Background

Users can view and manipulate charts and graphs related to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Gapminder is a non-profit founded in 2005 with the mission of “Fighting devastating ignorance with a fact-based worldview everyone understands.” Gapminder has a goal or promoting sustainable global development and achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.

To fulfill their aim, Gapminder is currently working on:

  • Keeping our tools’ statistical content up-to-date and making time series freely available in Gapminder World and Gapminder Countries.
  • Producing videos, Flash presentations and PDF charts showing major global development trends with animated statistics in colorful graphics.

All with the intention of being a “fact tank” that promotes a fact based world view.

Data Notes

The “Gapminder World” feature allows users to manipulate and explore pre-made graphs. Countries on graphs are colored based on continents and the dots are based on the country’s population. This feature allows users to scroll over each dot and reveal the country and the statistic. Users are able to manipulate the graph by limiting the countries shown. Users are also able to see an interactive map projecting the same data that the graph shows. When available, maps and graphs are available over a number of years. Users can then use the “play” button at the bottom of the screen to see the statistics change over time. Users are also able to download the original data in excel, csv, or pdf format. Users can click on the data tab to see all of the data used at Gapminder. Users can access where specifically the data is from. Years of data available vary based on type of data of interest.
